Lighting is an extremely important key element of design.

It can transform a space, bring drama or simply make it feel warm and cosy. It can highlight architectural features, artwork, different finishes, make rooms feel more spacious and give depth to an area.

In terms of types of lighting we can look into:

Natural Lighting

is KEY to any interior space as it creates healthier environments, increases serotonin and vitamin D levels, fights depression, improves sleep and gets anyone doing more things.

Architectural lighting

is the first layer of artificial lighting in a property.

It can join visually various spaces together or at the same time create visual barriers.

Functional lighting

is related to performing tasks, such as reading, cooking, writing; it should always be warm white, well balanced and constant as you don’t want any distractions whilst focusing on a task.

Decorative lighting

sets the scene of an interior space, it can be what we call low-level lighting with wall lights, table and floor lamps; or it can be created through the use of pendants and chandeliers to create a more dramatic and dynamic ambient.

What to do when natural lighting is not enough?

  • Identify the dark spots in each room and come up with a strategy to compensate for the lack of natural lighting with the use of downlights, uplights, wall lights, or linear led strips creating at the same time more interest in each room and ensuring that throughout the day each room has the right level of light.

  • Regarding colour temperature choose between 2,700-3,000k which will create well-balanced interiors especially in lounges, bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom and entrances. Anything above 3,000k will create rooms that are cooler in colour temperature, which can be used for example in garages, task lighting, or industrial facilities.

  • Choose lighter crispier wall finishes and avoid darker and moody wall finishes, and select a neutral base palette with pops of accent colour and perhaps select some textures to create more interest.
