The importance of an interior concept idea in design.

Any successfully designed property always has a story to tell, this story is known as the ‘interior concept idea’.

Coming up with this idea is an extremely important part of the interior design process as it will set the tone for the entire project. It will also enable you to create an overall design that is consistent across multiple rooms/spaces and give your property an identity that will help it stand out in today’s crowded property market.

At Mardesign, we come up with an interior concept design concept through interior design mood boards that will help you to visualise and create a starting point for your project. From there, we can develop your space planning strategy and all the additional technical information that your builders will need.

8 steps to your interior concept design

Coming up with an interior concept design that will form the basis of your entire project may seem like a daunting process – but there’s no reason to get overwhelmed.

Our process consists of just 8 simple steps that will help your project get off to the perfect start.

  1. Set up a Pinterest account for your mood board

  2. Choose a concept for your property (this could be anything from Scandi-style, dark & moody, mid-century or minimalist)

  3. Make a list of all the rooms in your property that will need to be designed

  4. Look for inspiration images online and save them to your Pinterest

5. Start by creating one master Pinterest board, then start to break this down into individuals boards that are organised into specific rooms

6. Determine a colour palette for your property

7. Introduce architectural features, accessories and styling in the design that relate to the concept

8. Always relate back to your master mood board & apply the same principles to each individual room

Where to find inspiration from?

If you’re looking on Pinterest for inspiration, there is a whole world of interiors that can be a source of inspiration.

Try searching for specific rooms, colours, styles, materials etc. to find styles that suit you.

If you’re struggling to find interiors that you like online, here are some of our favourite websites and sources where you can find some great interior design inspiration.

You can also find lots of inspiration by just searching through Instagram for hashtags such as interior design, Scandi-style, mid-century style etc.

Using your interior concept design

After you’ve come up with your mood board, you should find that the whole process of designing and furnishing your property will be much easier.

Although you don’t need to completely copy all the pictures you’ve found online, they can act as inspiration for your interior design decisions.
